Bureau of Labor Statistics Releases Employment / Occupational Projections to 2014
Employment in the service-providing industries is expected to
continue to grow strongly at a projected rate of 1.6 percent
annually. Goods-producing industries are expected to have no
growth in employment. Among the service-providing sectors,
the most rapidly growing industries are in the health care/social
assistance and educational services sectors. Employment in
these two sectors is predicted to grow at an annual average rate
of 2.8 percent from 2004-2014, adding 5.2 million new jobs.
Employment in the largest non-government sector, professional
and business services, is projected to grow 2.5 percent annually,
adding more than 4.5 million new jobs.
Professional and related occupations and services occupations
will add the most jobs from 2004-2014, providing 60 percent
of total job growth or 6 million new jobs. Most of the fastest
growing occupations are high wage, and most of the declining
occupations are low wage. The top fastest growing jobs are
all in IT or health care: home health aids, network systems
and data communications
analysts, medical assistants,
physician assistants, and
computer software engineers
(applications). Occupations
adding the largest number of
jobs include retail salesperson,
registered nurse, postsecondary
teacher, customer
service representative,
and janitor. |
