Rising Above The Gathering Storm
The prestigious National Academy of
Sciences released its congressionally requested quick turnaround
report Rising Above the Gathering Storm. A blueribbon
panel was asked to identify the top 10 actions that
Federal policymakers could take to enhance the U.S. science
and technology enterprise. The panel
expressed its deep concern that the
scientific and technical building
blocks of U.S. economic leadership are
eroding while many other nations are
gathering strength. The panel made
four recommendations with 20 action
steps (clean, affordable energy got a
special nod): improve math and science
education; strengthen long-term basic
research; develop, recruit, and retain top
students, scientists, and engineers from
both the U.S. and abroad; and ensure
that the United States is the premier
place in the world for innovation.
