National Innovation Summit
On December 6, 2005, about
60 corporate leaders, university presidents, and government
officials convened at the U.S. Department of Commerce to
examine the state of U.S. innovation and urge action from the
Administration. Administration top guns on hand included:
Education Secretary Spellings, Labor Secretary Chao, Commerce
Secretary Gutierrez, Energy Secretary Bodman, and NSF Director
Bement. The morning began with a public session to discuss
the Nation’s competitive challenges. Later, in breakout sessions
closed to the public, company honchos discussed policy actions
with Administration officials. Summit participants released
a statement calling for: more Federal R&D, including high
risk R&D; doubling the number of bachelors degrees awarded
in science, engineering, and mathematics; reform of skilled
worker immigration policies; and more funds for developing
nanotechnology, energy technologies, and high performance
computing.
